Job Title:                Mechanic I    

Department:        Public Works

Division:                  Fleet                                 

  

Summary:

Works under the general supervision of the Fleet Supervisor.  Performs diagnostic analysis, maintenance, repairs and adjustments on a variety of vehicles and equipment.  Performs Utah State emissions and inspections on light duty vehicles.  Has basic knowledge of construction equipment and hydraulics.  Completes computerized work orders on all work performed.  Ability to perform the full scope of position within one year.                                                       

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 Performs inspection and emissions on vehicles.  Holds current Emissions and Inspection Certification.

 Ability to diagnose problems, make repairs and adjustments on the following: Vehicle braking systems, anti-lock brake systems.  Vehicle steering systems including power steering systems.  Vehicle suspension systems.  Vehicle electric  lighting systems.  Vehicle starting and charging systems.  Vehicle fuel systems, inducing electronic and fuel injection systems.  Vehicle computerized electronic engine systems.  Vehicle heating and air conditioning systems.

 Performs tune ups and adjustments to gasoline powered engines, using proper test equipment and replacing defective parts as needed.

 Install, remove and repair two-way radios, light bars, and other accessories.

 Perform normal work required for seasonal equipment preparation and maintenance, i.e. snow plow blade replacement, minor repairs to snow plows, slurry box removal, etc.

 Repair and replace tires.

 Ability to perform basic welding as needed.

 Consult with Service Manager and/or Fleet Manager prior to performing extensive or costly repairs.

 Immediately take appropriate measures to insure personal safety and the safety of others.  Reports safety concerns immediately to a supervisor or the Fleet Superintendent.  Attends safety training/meetings as required.

 

Qualifications:

Must maintain current knowledge/skills necessary for maintenance and repairs of vehicles and equipment.  Must have knowledge of and observe safety rules, regulations and safe work practices in a fleet maintenance environment.  Ability to use tools and equipment, both manual and automated, necessary to perform the functions of the position.  Ability to use computerized diagnostic tools and equipment.  Ability to use radio communication system effectively.  Must understand, read, write and speak fluently in the English language.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals, operating and maintenance instructions.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, vendors and the general public.  Accepts assignments willingly and with a positive attitude.  Willingly accepts shift changes and overtime as needed.

 

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).  Minimum one year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.                                                  

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.                                                              

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to weigh information to make reasonable decisions to repair or replace vehicle parts and components taking safety and cost factors into account.                                                      

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must possess a valid Utah driver license.  Must possess current Utah State emissions and Inspections certificate.  Must possess a fork lift certification and have at least six months hands on experience in operating a forklift.

 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear; taste and smell.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Employee is required to clean and maintain work area at all teams.  May also be required to clean and maintain other areas in and around the facility including emptying garbage cans and keeping trash, parts, and fluids cleaned up and the floor scrubbed as needed.

 

Work Environment:

Exposure to moving mechanical parts and machinery.  Exposure to cold/heat; wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals.  Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.  Exposure to stress situations inherent in dealing with fellow employees, vendors, the public, constant deadlines, varying workloads and long work hours.

As support staff to emergency crews, employee may be subject to temporary or permanent shift changes, mandatory overtime and call outs as deemed appropriate to provide necessary services.  Every effort will be made to provide advance notice whenever possible.
